One of the most precious values a shared plant can bring with it is a little story. My grandmother showed me how the old-timey rocket larkspur (Consolida ajacis)with its tall spires of pink, blue, purple and white, has a rabbit face in each blossom! When I show it to all my garden visitors, and as I share the seeds, which should be planted in the fall, I expect recipients to pass the story along as well.
Larkspur, a type of delphinium, brings beautiful blue hues to a meadow garden. Traditional larkspur flowers from spring into early summer, but this variety, ‘Summer Blues’ Delphinium grandiflorum, flowers through summer, withstanding heat and humidity. It’s a short-lived perennial, meaning it will last two to three years in the meadow, then disappear. To keep the blue show going strong, plan to tuck new plants into soil or let plants self-sow (most effective in regions with cool summers). Hardy in Zones 3-7.
Summer-flowering larkspurs are lovely in dried arrangements. Cut the stems just before the blooms are completely open and strip away the leaves. Then tie the stems together and hang them upside down from a coat hanger, hook or clothesline to air-dry for a few weeks. Keep them out of the sun and make sure they have good air circulation. If there’s a lot of moisture in the room, you may need to use a dehumidifier to help prevent mold and mildew. Shown here: 'Guardian Lavender' (Delphinum elatum).
The most impactful design elements in this tween bedroom are the graphic, modern bull's-eyes painted on the focal wall. Hand-painted by family friend and painter Lou Kregel, each bull's-eye has five accent colors. From the outside in, the C2 Paints are: "Chamomile" C2-153, "Larkspur" C2-313, "Solo" C2-128, "Calypso" C2-089 and "Hydrangea" C2-315.
'Give a nod to the season without being too over the top," says planner Resha Zazueta, of Something To Celebrate. "Florals with a hint of holiday coloring, sprigs of mistletoe, and a hot chocolate bar bring a lovely wintry feel without turning a wedding into a Christmas party.” Flowers: White roses, deep red calla lilies, deep red chrysanthemums, white hydrangeas, blush peonies, red amaranthus, white hydrangeas, white larkspur, white wax flowers, dusty miller, white tallow berries, greenery.
