David Austin's 'L.D. Braithwaite' has the brightest crimson coloring of all English Roses. The variety is related to Austin's spectacular 'Mary Rose' and shares many of that rose's strengths, including excellent winter hardiness and heat and humidity tolerance. Its large flowers bloom abundantly all season. Flowers have little scent at first, but a charming Old Rose fragrance comes on as the flowers mature. Repeat-flowering. Grows to 4 ft tall by 4 ft wide. (David Austin 1988, Auscrim).
David Austin English Rose 'Vanessa Bell' is a top-performing rose of delicate beauty with an alluring freshness and grace. Its soft lemon-yellow flowers are held in large open clusters, accented by rounded buds tinged with rich pink. It blooms with abundance, being nearly covered with flowers from early summer till frost. Its compact growth habit is ideal for planting in the front of garden borders. The medium-strength fragrance is best described as green tea with aspects of lemon and, at times, honey. See davidaustinroses.com.
The goal of this project was to modernize the open plan living space, but in a thoughtful way that would respect the location and also provide the young bachelor with a functional design. The narrow living room space was one of the biggest challenges in the space planning. By creating a wall hung entertainment unit and bookcase, with a large area rug and small cocktail tables, the narrow space was visually widened.
To keep the flow of the space fluid and to create visually interest in the corner of the main living space, a custom round dining table with "wishbone" chairs make a bright statement and feel inviting.
The large apricot flowers of 'Crown Princess Margareta' have approximately 120 petals each, arrayed in a neatly-formed rosette. The fruity Tea Rose fragrance is strong and lovely. The flowers are borne in clusters on a tall, slightly arching shrub. This is a beautiful healthy rose that is particularly winter-hardy and thrives even under tough conditions. It grows to 5 ft tall by 4 1/2 ft wide or 9 to 11 feet as a climber. (David Austin 1999, Auswinter).

Most gardeners are used to growing beets as whole plants and harvesting the green leafy tops for stir-frys and other uses. But after the greens are gone, you can easily make a meal out of the large beetroots which are packed with healthy antioxidants. They are delicious roasted with some balsamic vinegar. Grow them from seeds in pots or in moist fertile soil after the last frost.
David Austin's 'Malvern Hills' Rambler is a glorious, repeat-blooming rambler rose that produces large clusters of small, double, soft yellow flowers. Its fragrance is a sweet musky Noisette scent. This is very healthy and reliable rose. The small green leaves are polished and pretty. The slender stems are strong with few thorns. It is a versatile climber, 10 to 12 ft tall, perfect for a pergola, small arbor, trellis or wall.
Another option for stones as lawn edging is to use large field stones. With this type of rock, you can source material locally and, depending on where you live, from natural areas. If you’re building a home or excavating a site on your property, save rocks you unearth to use as possible edging. When using rocks as edging, fit stones as closely together as you can to limit weed and grass growth. Use a product like Preen between and behind rocks to help prevent weed seeds from sprouting.
When used in multiples with a range of sizes, wreaths can make excellent wall or door sculptures. To create a snowman sculpture, pick up one large, one medium and one small wreath. Attach all three wreaths to one another with twine or decorative ribbon. Next, secure the grouping of wreaths to the front of a door with self-adhesive plastic hooks or over the door with a wreath hanger. For wall applications, use picture nails around the top of each of the three wreaths, then secure to the wall with hammer.
Rewarding and easy to grow, Meyer lemon (Citrus x meyeri) is prized by chefs for its intense flavor. It adapts well to growing in pots. In cold regions, shift containers indoors for winter. Keep plants in a too-small rather than a too-large pot for best growth. Most importantly, allow soil to dry out between waterings to avoid root problems. Meyer lemons offer a sweeter juice, less acid and a thinner peel than other lemons. Use it for lemonade, dropped into water or to season the rims of glasses.
David Austin English Rose James L. Austin has perfectly-formed flowers in an unusual shade of deep reddish-pink that's spectacular among garden companions in shades of blue, purple, grey, green and cream. The flowers form large rosettes with a classic button eye of the sort long associated with the Old Roses (especially the antique Gallicas and Albas). The dense petals shrug off bad weather. Its delicious fragrance is fruity, evoking blackberry and raspberry with hints of lemon zest and almond. See davidaustinroses.com.
Saucer magnolia (M. x soulangeana) is the single most popular magnolia, and it’s easy to see why. Its showy pink flowers steal the spotlight in early to mid-spring. The tree quickly grows to its mature height of 20 to 25 feet. Large blossoms to 8 inches across exude a beautiful perfume. In regions with lingering late spring frosts, don’t plant it near the southern side of a structure because retained heat might trigger early flowering, which frost can quickly wipe out. Hardy in Zones 4-9.
Ginnie Leeming of Hello Little Home found creative, money-saving ways to create her layered neutral decor. That tablecloth? An inexpensive drop cloth cut to fit her table. Those texture-rich placemats? “The placemats were created from a large piece of burlap that was intended for gardening. I cut out rectangles, then pulled strands of burlap off the edges to form a simple fringe,” Leeming says. A golden-wrapped box topped with a buffalo-plaid ribbon adds a bright pop at each place setting.
With a window between the bedroom and bathroom, plenty of natural light is able to flow into the room and make the space brighter. The sleek modern cabinets and clean white countertop and wall color makes the small space look larger and very clean, while the backsplash around the tub helps to give the walls a bit of color. The cabinets give the space much needed storage, while the double vanities make getting ready in the morning much easier.

As seen on Home Town, the Carson’s Laurel, MS house had a cramped kitchen and was lacking personality before renovations by hosts Ben and Erin Napier. After renovations, the home now features an updated larger French Country styled kitchen complete with new limestone countertops, stainless steel appliances, new wall and floor tile, distressed cabinet doors and a custom built white oak prep table built by host Ben Napier.
Some design choices can make large-scale items, such as light fixtures, pop even more. It can be as easy as adding a coat of paint over a weekend. In the kitchen and living room of this lake home, Metro Atlanta designer Beth Johnson painted the wood paneling, which had been a pickled oak color, a more appealing white. Then matched the frame of the artwork for a seamless look.
For the best results in terms of color, cold hardiness and overall growth, buy pansies like landscapers do, picking up larger cell packs or 3- or 4-inch pots. These plants have bigger root balls, which means plants will take off more quickly in beds and containers. Check roots to make sure they’re healthy like this—having many white, fibrous roots on the outside of the root ball. The best time to plant pansies is when leaves on trees first start to change color. Soil temps should be between 45 and 65 F.
In addition to Panacea’s easy access to beach activities, there’s no shortage of outdoor activities inland, too.
