To create a warm, inviting great room, designers opened the space into other rooms in the home, making it easily accessible from several points of entry. Then, designers added a variety of textures in a warm color palette to create the space's comfortable, yet chic, appeal. To give the space a touch of glamor, bronzite metallic tiles were installed around the fireplace to give the appearance of metal cladding without adding the cost, putting the finishing touches on the elegant, contemporary design.

Pick three or four types of objects, such as silhouettes, blue-and-white serving platters, trays and resin horns, and arrange them in a composition, says Susan Sully, author of “Past Present: Living with Heirlooms and Antiques."
