Ants scurrying on countertops or mouse droppings in HVAC grilles are signs that you have openings in your house that need to be closed, says Steve Gladstone, owner of Stonehollow Fine Home Inspection in Stamford, Conn. Check places like exhaust vents, condensate lines, pipes, ducts, utility access panels and garage doors — you’re looking for obvious gaps, signs of chewing or nesting, or ripped screening. If you aren’t sure what you’re looking at or don’t feel confident you can solve the problem yourself, call a professional exterminator. Mouse and bird droppings in particular can be hazardous to your health.
David Austin English Rose 'Olivia Rose Austin' combines beauty, fragrance and excellent repeat bloom with breakthrough health and disease-resistance. Named for the grand-daughter of rose hybridizer David C. H. Austin, the soft pink rose is considered one of the best roses the Austin team has introduced to date. It produces masses of blooms over an exceptionally long bloom season that starts three full weeks ahead of other English Roses and continues till frost. The soft pink flowers have an Old Rose formation that opens to a lovely cupped rosette. The medium-strong fragrance has distinctly fruity tints. The dark green foliage shows off the flowers beautifully.

On a trip to Uganda, one of 31 Bits’ founders discovered that the women in the country were making incredible jewelry out of old paper, but they lacked a way to sell it. That inspired her to team up with four friends to sell the handcrafted jewelry back home, and in turn provide the women with an income. 31 Bits also cares for its artisans holistically through counseling, health education, finance training and business mentorships. Shop their colorful Bitsies collection for the little ones, or their wide selection of statement necklaces and stylish bracelets for yourself.
Pamper yourself by transforming an outdoor space into a custom retreat. Japanese forest bathing research shows that time spent in the Great Outdoors brings significant health benefits—lower blood pressure, less stress, greater empathy. Green spaces soothe both body and brain, and you can reap the results with a spot in your own yard. Start your project by choosing an area with easy access. A small deck, porch, patio or corner of a garden provides a terrific foundation for a home-sweet-home getaway. Approach your project with an eye to design by including touches that speak to your style (retro? chic? urban?). You don’t have to spend big bucks to make it work. This welcoming retreat features a crate coffee table that blends beautifully with wooden chairs. Pots of colorful annuals bring nature near. Annuals include purple Angelonia with Raven (dark) sweet potato vine, Yellow Chiffon superbells, Royal Velvet supertunia, and ‘Banana Cream’ Shasta daisy with Vertigo purple fountain grass.
Peppermint offers a healing touch for many ailments—sunburn, headache or muscle pain. To release mint’s medicinal properties, crush leaves first using a mortar and pestle or blender. For headaches and muscle cramps, make a paste of crushed leaves and water, place between pieces of cheesecloth (or other thin cloth), and apply to skin at the site of pain. For a tension headache, apply the poultice to the base of your neck. For sunburn, mix crushed leaves with cool water, strain, and spritz the water onto the burn. Menthol in peppermint feels cooling to the skin.
Panacea gets its name from the “cure-all” qualities of the Wakulla Springs. In the early 20th century, people from all over the world would journey to bathe in the hot springs, which were thought to have healing powers. Today, taking a dip in the springs is almost a rite of passage. If you’re feeling adventurous, jump from the 22-foot-tall observation tower at Wakulla Springs State Park into the 69 degree water of Wakulla Spring. If you’re looking to relax, find relief from the summer heat under the large, shady cypress trees.
Apple cider vinegar brings natural healing to skin cells, helping to prevent break-outs and reduce acne scarring (thanks to its anti-inflammatory qualities). It has antibacterial properties that help eliminate acne-causing bacteria. For a simple toner, steep fresh curly parsley in boiling water for roughly 10 minutes (parsley helps boost collagen production). Mix one-quarter to one-half cup of cooled, drained parsley water with ½ teaspoon unpasteurized ACV and up to 20 drops of tea tree oil (antifungal, antiviral). Store in a cool, dry place for daily use. Stash in the fridge for long-term storage (several weeks). Apply with a cotton ball, or use a spray bottle to spritz on skin.
