A stylish spiral staircase provides access from the first floor great room sitting area to the upper gallery where the majority of the room's books are kept. The gallery allows the space to maintain its grand feel-true to its original intent, while the contemporary-chic design of the space helps to bring the room into the 21st Century.
Originally this grand library and trophy room was encased in red mahogany walls from floor to ceiling. The homeowners wanted to give their home an update, so designers transformed this dark and outdated space into an elegant, contemporary-chic great room that is now the owners' favorite space in the home.
Bookshelves fill an entire wall in this light-filled, contemporary study with eclectic accents. A pair of cowhide Wassily-style armchairs form a cozy seating nook that's lit for reading by a single pendant. White walls make the art pop, creating a gallery effect.
The Sharps think the key to a focused gallery wall is a mix of metallic and wood frames. The Sharps recommend not being afraid to go big. "Fewer bigger pieces makes a statement." And this is one case where you definitely want to overthink it. "Even though the gallery wall seems random, it's not," says Patrick. "Look closely and you'll see several straight lines along the edges of multiple frames. Brings a little order to the chaos." The long wooden table helps define the living and dining spaces and often features stacked books like a library table.
When the homeowners went to renovate their 1980s home, they knew they wanted a sophisticated style that was a little more casual and up-to-date, so designers transformed the outdated library into a beautiful, contemporary-chic great room for the family. Designers worked with a local wood company to refinish the entire space, stripping the original stain and bleaching the wood to achieve a stylish "greige" stain on the walls and ceiling beams. To maintain the room's grand feel, designer chose to keep and update the gallery, which also adds height to the room. Finally, the marble clad and antique mirror fireplace surround helps to break up the wood paneled walls and the home's original handrail, comprised of brass and iron, was modified to meet modern safety codes and standards.
