For a multifunctional outdoor living room that would serve as a family gathering space and a meeting area for the owners’ clients and colleagues, landscape architect Mark Tessier created an accordingly varied lighting scheme. Traditional outdoor lighting illuminates the area without making a statement, while style enters from above and below, via a flickering fire pit and paper lanterns of various sizes hung randomly throughout the space. “After dusk, these lights cast a warm, inviting glow festive for simple or elegant gatherings any time of the year,” says Tessier.
Yellow light shines from the lanterns mounted on wood columns as evening sets in around this cozy country patio. Three stone steps lead from the covered section to an open-air patio with a stone fire pit. A stone wall surrounds the patio and is bordered by a mulched section of trees and shrubs.
A floating wood bench is mounted on a stone base wall and padded with black throw pillows. Black, bowl-shaped fire pits placed near the bench break up the empty space leading to the in-ground hot tub. Standing lanterns add a touch of decoration and functionality for evening lighting. Trees and plants surround the area creating natural privacy and adding color.
Thanks to clever repurposing, its use of reclaimed materials and a bold color palette, this 60-square-foot Tinseltown bathroom is ready for its closeup. The biggest splurge of the bathroom's redesign was a pair of vintage barn sconces. Powder-coated in high-gloss fire-engine red and made of steel, the sconces add industrial flair complete with cages to contain light bulbs. Reclaimed wood and exposed pipe towel rack help complete the industrial look and provide masculine touches in this contemporary rustic bathroom.
Prior to the makeover, this master bedroom was in contractor-grade condition, from its neutral carpet to the beige paint on its walls. Taking inspiration from its colorful abstract art, the room received a new identity with shades of blue accented with fire-engine red. The paper lantern light fixtures add lightness to this otherwise masculine bedroom.
