The industrial-strength nylon carpet won’t stain, looks great and is practical. The microsuede sofa and chairs are also impervious to staining. Minimalist white cabinetry provides much-needed storage.

The homeowners wanted a unique design for their Bolinas beach house, so designers aimed to create a clean, airy, modern space. They started with bright, white paint throughout the home and then brought in bold, black accents to contrast the neutral color palette. They continued the design with durable fabrics and furniture to withstand the salty, ocean air and the myriad guests and young children that often occupy the space. Finally, they added a few touches of Scandinavian design to finish off the home.

In this 600-square-foot home, the living area doubles as an entryway and serves as the family’s main gathering space. A graphic rug anchors the seating area, and a roomy sectional sofa is covered in a durable, neutral fabric. Glass-topped wood cubes are lightweight and versatile as a coffee table.
Contemporary-style sofas, upholstered in durable Sunbrella fabric, feature aluminum frames and synthetic wicker bases — both recyclable. Two cube-shaped, industrial-style coffee tables were handcrafted from sustainable wood by carpenter David Brown. The yellow chairs provide a nice contrast against the black and white patterned pillows and add pops of color against the brick floor and accent landscaping wall.
This sunroom uses blue hues to echo the colors of the Hamptons Bay. A magical escape for pint-sized family members, the third-floor kids’ bedroom at HGTV Green Home 2012 is designed to stand up to wear and tear. Twin beds fashioned from repurposed pieces of pine, poplar and plywood feature black and white headboards upholstered in durable acrylic fabric. Accounting for guests' every need, green quilts are folded at the edge of each bed, should evenings take a chilly turn.
