Keeping personal connection in the design, the homeowner wanted to incorporate the dining table and chairs she had inherited from her grandmother. The chairs were recovered in a warm, visually-textured fabric selected to harmonize with the open-plan living-dining area. The set is supported with a custom-sized wool rug below and a “sculptural luminary” above.

The interior of this contemporary home is huge, so designers used rugs to help visually delineate dining and living areas. The pretty graphic patterns pick up the earth tones that are so lovely in the hardwood floor and cypress ceiling.
Throw pillows in blue and yellow liven up this traditional living room’s overall neutral color palette. Designer Kristen Hutchins layered a patterned wool rug over a simpler jute rug, and says the key to layering rugs is making sure the larger, main rug is neutral. "If you start out with a larger, neutral rug as the base, you can add a fun, patterned rug to define just the seating area,” she says.
Designer Brian Patrick Flynn says this large area rug that helps anchor the dining room looks like a chunky Nordic sweater, handmade with black and gray jute and wool with eyelash fringe detailing. A premium nonslip rug pad underneath protects the weave and helps extend the life of the rug.
The area rug, as well as the lounge chairs, are custom pieces designed by Habachy Designs. The oval shape of the space posed a challenge, so the rug was made to accommodate the design. African and Asian decor throughout the home add a worldly touch.
