This exquisite dining room's jet-black walls play off the white ceiling and colorful striped area rug. The Chanel artwork adds a sense of supreme sophistication, while the antler chandelier brings texture and a rustic element to the space.
Light yellow walls provide a bright background for this contemporary sitting room. A black modern swiveled lamp stands next to a modern lounge rocking chair with white cushions. A striped pillow compliments the colors of the multicolor blocked rug. Tall black and white shelves provide perfect book storage.
Though dominated by neutral walls, furniture and floors, this transitional living room is anything but bland or boring. Rather, an abundance of patterned pillows decorate the tufted sofas and pull some visual interest into the space, while a striped area rug below enlivens the hardwood floors.
Clean white millwork stands out against the dark hardwood flooring, creating appealing contrast in this home's entry. A bold-striped area rug in white and blue add a pop of color to the space's neutral palette, while a brown carpet runner leads upstairs, softening the wood stairs.
Break up a neutral color palette with a graphic pattern, like the striped rug that anchors this transitional living room. A large fireplace is the focal point of the space, with built-in shelves providing storage and display areas on either side.
Natural light illuminates this home office with pink, blue and gray color accents. A striped area rug is positioned underneath the wood and metal desk, while a gray chair is positioned behind it. A pink vase and blue table lamp decorate the desk, while a nearby gray and white striped armchair provides a spot to relax.
Keep in mind that your furnishings should be in proportion not only to the actual size of the space but also to the perceived size — which can be affected by such elements as paint color or extensive areas of glass. In this project, the latter came into play. “The floor-to-ceiling windows make this small space feel larger, and to keep that open feeling the furniture needed to be scaled appropriately,” says architect Leslie Arnold. “Choosing furniture that was open at the bottom — i.e. pieces that do not go all the way to the floor — ’enlarges’ the room by allowing the entire floor to be visually unbroken. The simple, solid colored upholstered furniture allows the brightly colored rug and wall art to be the main focus of the room.”
Bamboo blinds and beige floor-length curtains all for total natural light control in this cozy living room. A soft blue sofa compliments the light tones of the room design and matches the blue stripes on the wood framed arm chairs. The furniture faces a gold framed coffee table over a large floral area rug. A thick fireplace surround is fitting to the grounded, traditional style of the room.
This eclectic living room features a black-and-white-striped area rug and gold round coffee table. Several small red-framed mirrors are arranged gallery style on a nearby wall, while red and yellow throw pillows provide an additional pop of color in the neutral room.
An ornate chandelier with varying green miniature lampshades serves as the focal point in this white dining space. Green and white striped curtains pop against white walls and plantation shutters while a black oriental rug grounds the bright room. A white square dining table with eight chairs provides lots of seating in this spacious dining area.
A large thick red and gold area rug anchors this sitting area and unifies the red and gold color palette. A dark green marble fireplace and white mantel serve as the focal point of the room. A red sofa, neutral chaise, striped armchair, dark wood coffee table and red ottomans surround the fireplace with rich, luxurious colors and textures.
A textural finish on the wall encompasses the design at room level while a lighter wall section and dark ceiling add beautiful levels of contrast. A sleek wood desk with a chrome frame and yellow and gray striped chair create a stylish workspace facing the bright natural light from the glass door.
In a small outdoor space, an outdoor rug can play multiple roles, creating a seating “island” as it does here, adding color and style, and making the area appear larger thanks to the introduction of an overall pattern. Designer Annastasia Mitchell chose this rug carefully for its seafoam blue color, which repeats the apartment’s interior color palette, “providing a sense of visual flow,” she says, and to repeat the horizontal pattern of the louvered windows.
A striped banquette provides seating around a modern tulip table in this pastel living space. A patterned area rug anchors the room, combining the eating area and conversation space. A portrait of Mao Tse Tung and a mix of furniture styles creates an eclectic vibe.
