A Chicago high-rise bedroom evokes a well-balanced yet cozy atmosphere. The space contains a touch of the homeowners' beloved Texas in the form of a fabric reminiscent of animal hide on an ottoman, along with a feeling of modern, bold Chicago with bright-red accent colors and a black leather, tufted headboard. Draperies are custom-designed with red fringe borders, and a hint of elegance is imbued nearby with two shimmering, mirrored nightstands.
French doors open from the living room to the den, revealing a pair of stools upholstered in a custom fabric. A large blue linen ottoman also serves as a coffee table, and two Griffin club chairs with nailhead trim create a cozy sitting area. White sheers filter the natural light and draw the eye up to the coffered ceiling to heighten the space, while a blue-and-white cotton rug softens the hardwood floor.
The open floor plan of this contemporary living space is ideal for entertaining. A putting green on the balcony is easily accessed through chic sliding doors that provide an exquisite view of the urban surroundings while bathing the space in natural light. Two sofas and matching ottomans, along with clusters of octagon tables, allow for flexible arrangements, accommodating gatherings from intimate to grand. A graphic area rug in blacks and browns anchors the room, while a modern gray built-in bookcase with custom shelving anchors the wall near the entrance.
For the lady of the home, designers created a dressing room. The ceiling in the space is outfitted with the custom, cherry millwork that runs throughout the rest of the home, while a chandelier hangs elegantly in the center. A wall full of drawers and cabinets give the owner plenty of space for her clothes, while an adjacent wall has shelves to house her shoes. To make the space even more elegant, designers brought in a cozy leather couch, a pair of fuzzy ottomans and a soft, plush rug. Finally, a piece of Prada artwork ties the space together.
When specifying upholstery for a beachfront house belonging to an active family, designers Betsy Burnham and Max Humphrey of Burnham Design opted to cover all the furniture in indoor-outdoor fabric. "Every piece is done in Sunbrella fabric — even the pillows and the custom area rug underneath. Outdoor fabric was the perfect choice for this room, which is "command central" for TV-watching and game playing.” And, they note, “In terms of the furniture plan, sometimes it’s dramatic to do fewer pieces and keep the scale large of each and bold; that’s the case here. We selected the largest sectional we could fit in the space and made sure it was super deep and comfy. We paired it with a large upholstered ottoman, which serves double duty as a coffee table and great place for everyone to kick up their feet.”
