Sometimes, the architecture of your home is the best guide for the style of the furnishings you fill it with; other times, its surroundings will direct you. When choosing furniture for this living room, designer Kristen Rivoli took the latter tack. “This space is in a building right next to the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), in New York City, so our inspiration was the classic midcentury modern furniture you might find at the museum,” she says. “We found the side table at a vintage furniture store, but the sofa is new—it’s available through KRID but it has the lines of a classic tuxedo-style sofa. The Brittania light fixture is also new but adds to the midcentury style, and the toss pillows are custom-made in a mellow color palette typical of the ‘50s and ‘60s.”
The custom designed swimming pool is the focal point for the home's outdoor entertaining space. On one end of the pool, a hot tub gives the homeowners a place to relax, while at the other end, a built-in dining table provides the space a unique dining option.
A new rug took up $110 of the $500 budget. Designer Heather Hogan Roberts found this fleece rug with a geometric pattern on sale and saved more with a 10 percent off coupon. She bought two ikat window panels and got one for 40 percent off. Those savings allowed her to buy discounted fabric for custom pillows and the elephant end table, which cost $40 at a thrift shop. The fiddle-leaf fig adds natural beauty to a corner with no need for wall art.
The secret to a successful modern apartment is plenty of storage. The built-in cabinets stretch from the dining room to the living room to maximize storage and enhance both spaces. The recessed section on the living room side enlarges the space at seating level while creating end tables and a serving counter. Yellow and pale teal accent the seating area, and a zebra-print rug provides a statement piece.
A chic and welcoming pergola is the perfect space for a large outdoor sectional encircling a custom fire table and water feature crowning one end of an oasis-like, Mediterranean patio. Elegant, custom outdoor draperies can be drawn for additional privacy.

A custom picnic table and built-in bench serve as a dining spot in this country home. Mission-style metal pendant lights illuminate the table’s rich wood surface. Dark-brown cement floors and undyed-linen curtains blend in with the home's natural setting. But this place isn’t as rustic as it appears -- the cabinet in the corner houses a high-end refrigerator.
A central color palette comprised of brown, cream and white ensures that this eclectic living room looks cohesive and inviting. Where an Art Deco buffet and trunk-style coffee table provide essential storage space for odds and ends, a midcentury modern armchair offers a seat for guests.

Light beige walls, light hardwood flooring and a tall stone fireplace keep the high ceiling and spacious floor plan feel even more open. A pair of beige sofas face a green, upholstered coffee table and a mosaic style end table finishes off the living space.
