This beautiful, modern master bedroom is a great place to relax after a long day. Three windows across the space let in plenty of natural light, but they are equipped with room darkening shades to block out any extra light at night. In one corner of the room, designers added a sitting area-perfect for taking in a morning cup of coffee or snugging up with a good book on a cold day. On the other side of the room, a desk rests between two large windows, keeping the desk well lit and providing beautiful views that make the position of this piece a perfect space for writing.
The media room in this space does triple duty as a media room, an office and a guest bedroom. In this corner of the space, a stylish, modern desk is neatly situated to provide the homeowners the perfect place to work. Open shelving runs the perimeter of the room, making books and necessities easily accessible while working, while a large window wall allows in plenty of natural light and gives the homeowners beautiful views of the Boston Commons below.
Color on the base of one of a pair of facing islands echoes the hue of the bold backsplash in this otherwise neutral kitchen. The open-concept space features a cozy breakfast nook tucked into a corner surrounded by windows, ushering in loads of natural light. In the adjoining living space, a retractable glass wall opens to bridge the home's indoor and outdoor spaces. Hardwood floors warm up the white kitchen and provide continuity throughout the kitchen and living area.
This breakfast nook provides a cozy space to wake up and enjoy your morning cup of coffee. The large unobstructed window fills the area with light while the bench, built into the corner, gives ample seating and tons of pillows to lean on. The traditional Mediterranean style of the kitchen is modernized with a neutral gray wall color. Storage isn't a problem in the eating area, the bench has been outfitted with concealed storage for dishes or linens.
A new rug took up $110 of the $500 budget. Designer Heather Hogan Roberts found this fleece rug with a geometric pattern on sale and saved more with a 10 percent off coupon. She bought two ikat window panels and got one for 40 percent off. Those savings allowed her to buy discounted fabric for custom pillows and the elephant end table, which cost $40 at a thrift shop. The fiddle-leaf fig adds natural beauty to a corner with no need for wall art.
This laundry room lives much larger than its square footage, thanks to smart planning by Geoff Chick & Associates. The base cabinets that flank the washer and dryer are just 18 inches deep, but extending the wall of cabinetry all the way to the 12-foot ceiling vastly increases the usable space. Windows visually expand the room; the natural light flooding in enhances the warm notes in the soft gray paint. "Most laundry rooms are tucked away in a dark corner or in the basement," Chick notes.
As seen on HGTV Design Star, this bedroom was upgraded to a gray contemporary theme. The matching twin beds feature a patterned comforter, slanted gray corner headboard, and turquoise throw blanket for a touch of color. The window seat displays various gray, black and white throw pillows. The room's review on the show stated, "J and Doug have trouble making decisions together from the very beginning, and the result is a poorly executed room. J's headboards are sloppy, leaving judge Genevieve Gorder to say, 'If you're not going to do it well, don't do it.'"
Huge windows with accordion blinds allow for full control of the natural light into this transitional bedroom. A dark orange accent wall adds depth to the design without being overly bright. A large tufted headboard folds at the corners to fully enclose the bed space. Yellow accents on the bed add the perfect touch of sunny color.
In this bedroom, Mina Starsiak and Karen E. Laine created a fun bedroom with a Moroccan vibe. The neutral color on the walls reflects the natural light that streams in through open windows, but bright colors liven up the space. Funky throws and patterned pillows adorn the bed, while a modern, green chair rests in a corner of the space. A multi-color ottoman sits proudly in the middle of the room, while an orange lamp sits atop a golden end table. To complete the space, artwork adorns the walls, pulling the unique details of this space together.
In this living room, a modern sectional sofa is situated in front of a large screen television to provide plenty of seating and an optimal viewing area for screenings of the family's favorite movies. Shelving and cabinets in the far corner provide a place for storage and display, while a fireplace to the left of the television warms the space. A window lets in plenty of natural light, and recessed lighting helps to give additional light to the space. To finish off the space, designers added a neutral, grid-patterned area rug to provide definition to the living space.
Large concrete tiles made a grid to form the walkway and backyard at this modern home. Slivers of grass between the slabs add breaks of color to the industrial look. The beige exterior walls are filled with large windows and sharp corners for a clean, modern look. Wood balconies with glass railings adds a warmer tone to the exterior color scheme.
Lit by windows on all sides of the space, this elegant, contemporary living room is light, bright and inviting. Warm red accents are scattered throughout the space, adding warmth, while several pieces of traditional furniture, such as the dressers in the front corners of the space, lend a touch of sophistication to this stylish living room.
If you like the tropical vibe of Philodendron selloum but can’t accommodate its large size, look to ‘Super Atom’ philodendron. This ruffle-leaved beauty looks like a miniature selloum, growing only 3 feet tall and wide. It’s a great coffee table plant when it’s young. As it grows, shift it to a corner table or a spot on the floor near a bright window. ‘Super Atom’ is branded as a member of Costa Farms’ Plants of Steel collection, which features tough-as-nails plants perfect for beginners. These plants withstand low light, irregular watering and low humidity—and still look great.
