To give a family in Santa Monica, California, the multipurpose guest house/screening lounge they’d dreamed of, the design team at Spazio LA turned to an unexpected place: the four-car garage. "We converted half of the space while leaving the other half as a two-car garage," said the designers. "The space now includes a full screening room, a bar-kitchenette, a full bathroom and a Murphy bed for overnight guests."
Originally a garage and tool shed, this space has been converted into a family room. Comfy as well as cozy, the large sectional and cushioned settee are perfect for a family having an energetic night in. The neutral color palette in this room gets a slight boost with the introduction of some brighter tones in the settee cushion and sectional throw pillows.
When a client had Bill Fry Construction convert an old garage into a guesthouse, she chose open shelving to showcase books and art. Because the space isn't the home's primary kitchen, less storage is needed. In a busier kitchen, careful editing is the key to making open shelving work.
