Exposed wood beams highlight the elongated look of this spacious kitchen and compliment the natural wood finish of the cabinet. A large island provides polished counter space for working and eating. Leather bar chairs blend with the calm color scheme and cool, contemporary style. Large black pendant lights hang over the island adding a heavier element against the airy, while walls.
The rough-hewn walls and brick ceiling lend an old-world elegance to this sitting area off the wine cellar in this 11,400-square-foot California estate. Sleek glass doors and a chic bar cart bridge the old with the new and give a nod to the home's contemporary interior design. A lantern overhead fits the nature of the space.
The homeowner's newly renovated kitchen is shown. The wall section dividing the kitchen and dining room has been removed, allowing a straight line of site through the whole first floor. The refrigerator now stands where the old sink previously was, and the old window closed up. A new slightly smaller kitchen island allows the same bar stools to fit comfortably in the narrow room. The sink has moved below the other back window. A clean white color scheme, updated stainless steel appliances and modern overhead lighting create a contemporary feel to the space without changing the room's size.
Hezekiyah and Nyahsa wanted a mature space to entertain friends, so Drew and Jonathan from HGTV's hit show Buying and Selling designed a contemporary space for the couple. By lightening up the wall shade, they were able to brighten the space, making it seem larger. Then, they brought in new, modern furniture that provides plenty of seating for a small gathering. The modern end table and lamp help to brighten up the space as the metallic water bar at the end of the space reflects light back into the rest of the room. Pillows and artwork adorn the space to add splashes of color.
The design of the storefront for this apothecary is all about lifestyle, mixing a contemporary look with an old-world service culture. Prescriptions are hand crafted on-site where a clean discrete box allow patrons to view their medications being created, and fresh drinks are served by an in-store juice bar. Air and light quality were designed to take advantage of simple, sustainable and natural materials result in clean spaces to serve and be served in. The branding, clear and bold, was integrated into an architectural element-a supergraphic shelf-which revitalized the strip mall storefront. Comfortable and uplifting, unlike typical pharmacies, this multi-functional space serves up a dose of handcrafted goods with a modern style.
My practical approach to dining room design is to choose amazing chairs with an understated table or just the opposite so that they aren’t competing to be the focal point. Here we selected a classic double pedestal table to compliment ten plush chairs with metallic woven interiors and soft white leather backs. The drapery is as clean as the chair’s design and the bar cabinet is intentionally white to allow the 72”x72” abstract painting to become the star of the show. It was one of the pieces from our client’s existing collection that I insisted we keep. This room is also an example of how well classics and contemporary marry. The chandelier, inspired by the painting, mimics the repetition in the panels and is shaped like the table to which it’s perpendicular. Harmony is a key ingredient to successfully designed rooms.
