This sitting room is a tiny space that was maximized by creating a monochromatic scheme. By using materials in the same color but by varying the texture and incorporating elements of shine, the space feels more spacious than it is. Using over-scaled damask wallpaper with a metallic finish brings a traditional pattern some glamour. The mirrored desk brings a sexy vibe while allowing the eye to pass over it cleanly. Modern framed artwork also gives the room a more updated look. The white shag balances all the color and shine in the room.
"I thought I was an all-white gal," laughs Eicholz of her preference for white walls, upholstery and furniture as seen in this hallway with a vintage hutch that she refurbished. But Savannah designer Robyn Roberts helped Eicholz get out of her comfort zone and inject some color into her design scheme, just one advantage of consulting a professional designer with a fresh perspective for help.
Floral art by Erin Gregory was the inspiration for the palette in the family room. The two blue chairs were painted a custom aqua and covered in a durable Sunbrella fabric, and the draperies at the arched window are color blocked with blue and cream. A leather ottoman, green glass lamps, sofas and shearling benches add to the comfortable feel in the room designed by Kandrac & Kole.
The architect created a tall, grand space for the living room. Splashes of color in the furnishings and accessories work well with the neutral palette. The use of the reclaimed beams truly showed off the artistry of the builder, Ron. Knowing that the reclaimed beams would be a focal point, designer Kristina Crestin brought in a dark door and window sashes to add a bit more dimension.
This eclectic, feminine office space combines function and glamour with loads of playful color. Gray and yellow draperies complement the home's overall palette, while vivid fuchsia livens up the room. The design team infused the client's personality into the space by customizing it with fashion accessories from her own wardrobe. Large-scale artwork above the desk adds drama, as well as an eye-popping focal point.
Clean modern forms are the defining element in this room, with a sleek sectional and Milo Baughman-inspired chairs combined with minimalist white cabinetry. The brightly colored Ikat-patterned rug was the inspiration for the palette which includes pink, yellow and blue. The focal fireplace wall has a gray-and-white faux finish and a large round nickel-framed mirror over the mantel.
Deep blue trim frames this bright and stylish girl's bedroom as well as matches the built in shelf unit covering one wall. A raspberry pink stripe on the ceiling, upholstered desk bench, throw pillow and small decorative details create a beautiful pop of accent color throughout the room. The gray carpet and chair keeps the room looking light without using a monochromatic white palette.
Four dining room chairs in a houndstooth pattern upholstery are the visual standout in this transitional dining room. The decor and palette draw subtly on a '70s theme, with the gold and earth tones in the chairs' fabric set against a warm beige wall color, a metal frame table and votive candle centerpiece in amber gold, and wall art framed with a rich red border.
A vibrant, pop-art-cum-cubism style framed print fits this playroom's bold and colorful, yet refined scheme. Modern, round green stools possesses a curved seat meant to hug the body for ultra-comfortable seating and aesthetic appeal. The striped wall, while bold, doesn't go over-the-top thanks to grounding elements in complimenting colors, like the carpet and stools.
The monochromatic white palette shows you don’t need to add color to the walls, countertops or floors to make a bathroom stylish, says Ili Hidalgo-Nilsson, architect and designer with Terracotta Design Build. The Atlanta firm renovated the outdated bathroom, removing the heavy tilework from the walls and creating a clean, modern bathroom with open shelves. They also opted against extras such as crown molding.
Bold colors stand up to the dramatic architectural details in this traditional bedroom, designed for the homeowners' adult son when he comes home to visit. White beadboard on the ceiling is in keeping with the home's coastal design theme, while deep navy brings a nautical element to the space. Orange accents and graphic patterns pop against the room's neutral palette, while navy crown molding adds a crisp, tailored touch.
This kitchen and living room combo includes bright, fresh color, for a "happy" feel. The kitchen opens into a comfy living room which makes a perfect space for entertaining. A coffee table holds plants and stacks of books; nearby sofas and chairs are perfect for reading. The island in the kitchen is surrounded by basic white stools, and art in the nearby dining room sets a whimsical but classy atmosphere.
After: Beams were installed into the ceiling of the porch to bring out the house's Craftsman character, and crown molding in each square of the ceiling makes the space feel more like an additional room in the home. The robin's-egg blue door is the perfect splash of color to offset the largely neutral palette.
The graphic patterns and bold colors characteristic of midcentury style can overwhelm a small space. But with a little creativity you can get the same effect, as designer Michelle Lord did in this bathroom update. Adding a lattice panel between the vanity and toilet/bath area not only created a sense of privacy but also incorporated pattern and texture, without straying from the all-white and wood palette.
A large white shelving unit surrounds the TV, creating a stylish display area for media components and decorative items. A small black bar area is illuminated with three globe-shaped gold pendant lights, adding a touch of glamour to this sleek space. A leather upholstered bench behind the neutral sofa provides additional seating and adds a pop of color to the room's neutral palette.
This large kitchen island provides counter space for prep and cooking as well as an eat-in area. Red place mats and a red fondue pot bring color to the sunny, white surroundings and tie in the red details in the connected living space. Mounted bicycle wheels are a unique decorative statement.
High-tech stainless steel appliances, streamlined white cabinets and clean-lined countertops combine to create a contemporary kitchen filled with luxe touches. The all-white palette and large window lend the space a light, bright and airy vibe. A slab of Blue de Savoie marble serves as a backsplash as well as a focal point, while boldly colored accents add flair.
