The striping on 'Chioggia' beets occurs on the interior of the vegetable and gives it a candy-cane pattern. This heirloom variety was first introduced to the American public in the late 1840. It was named after a fishing village in Northern Italy where it had been first cultivated in the early 1800s. It can also go by the names: Candy Stripe or Bull’s Eye Beet.
A gift tag tied around a candy cane becomes a place card as well as a treat for kids who eat all of their dinner. Write each child's name on a shipping tag with red permanent marker and layer over a large gift tag. Tie the tag onto a candy cane with ribbon and place on each slate next to a piece of chalk.
Handmade sleeves or holders for candy canes have been around for generations. This sweet throwback holiday craft is quick, easy and fun for kids of all ages to make using just felt and glue. Perfect for a kids' table, this simple, shatterproof centerpiece is made from foam candy cane spheres, tree trimmings, red feathers and glittery plastic ornaments, all tucked inside a Chinese takeout-style box.
Put crushed or damaged candy canes to use as cupcake toppings. Dress up store-bought or homemade cupcakes by adding crushed bits of candy canes on top of whipped frosting. In addition to using for cupcakes, crushed candy canes also make for excellent garnish atop hot chocolate and coffee.
