Designers created a bathroom that would carry on the timeless feel of the kitchen into the bathroom, but would be youthful enough to appeal to kids and stylish enough to appeal to guests. They used matte black fixtures to add a fun contrast, but they also left open the possibility for the addition of color.
A stained butcher block island creates a gathering place in the Atlanta townhome of a couple who loves to entertain. The wood, brass Bertoia-style barstools and Edison bulbs create warm contrasts to the black and gray finishes in the kitchen.
“Black and white is a classic combination that I will always love,” says designer Brooke Wagner. “Using greenery in a high-contrast black and white room is a great way to soften it up a little, while still keeping the palette neutral.”
Whitewashed bricks contrast the custom metal-studded sculpture to create a unique finish on the fireplace. “It’s almost reminiscent of old ironwork,” said designer Tiffany Brooks, whose inspiration for the finish was a pair of fishnet stockings. A flat-screen television displays a rotating loop of artwork to accent the space until it’s time to tune in to your favorite show.
A native plant, meadow rue (Thalictrum aquilegiifolium) adds height and fine textured beauty to plantings. ‘Black Stockings’ sweetens any scene with black stems that contrast prettily with blue-green leaves and lavender blooms. Meadow rue flowers in mid- to late summer and makes a good streamside or back-of-the-border plant. Blossoms beckon hummingbirds and butterflies. Plants grow 48 inches tall by 24 inches wide. Hardy in Zones 5-9.
As seen on HGTV Design Star, the one standout feature in this gray bedroom is Doug's feature wall. He uses a graphic black-and-white wallpaper to create the focal point and adds a large round mirror to expand the small space and reflect the view of the city. Candice loves the contrast of the patterned wallpaper and how the mirror adds depth to the room.
