In the powder room downstairs, designers went with a stylish, black and white, penny round tile floor. Then, they covered the walls in a metallic, geometric print wallpaper and ran black baseboards around the base of the wall, creating a space that makes a statement for guests as they wash up for dinner.
This stately bookcase is befitting the award-winning residence of the chancellor of North Carolina State University. Designed by Design Lines, Ltd. and built by Rufty Homes, it was constructed as four boxes that were then set flush in-wall. We especially like the faceplate overlay with the black lacquer finish that serves to frame the bookcase. Note how it was also used on the baseboard where the cabinets are set, anchoring it to the room.
Black and gold is a key part of the English Regency-style aesthetic. This elegant master bathroom by designer Patricia McLean has sleek surfaces, including the black porcelain sink, tile and marble baseboards. Black customized full-panel shutters and a Regency-style bookcase with a black wax finish add polish. The look is reinforced by a stenciled zebra rug and taffeta shower curtain.
