The wall between the kitchen and living room is long gone, and a new, black iron retaining wall with gridded windows now defines the space between the kitchen and the foyer in an inviting way. "That wall is like, Let's get on the other side of it!," Joanna said. New hardwood floors, a massive new kitchen island, a teal backsplash and opulent new brass pendant lights complete the kitchen's transformation.
A classic black and white color palette characterizes the living room, from the walls to the massive overhead pendant light. The palette repeats throughout the home, providing the perfect canvas for the many pops of color that bring the combination of Angolan and African American cultures that characterize the family into the space. As a final touch, plants lend a colorful touch of life that makes the space even more inviting.
The homeowners wanted a simple, modern bedroom design, so designers started with sleek, neutral tile on the floor and a complementary wood paneling on the wall. Then, they added a four post bed and pendant light to create height in the design. For comfort, designers added a silk rug and black and white curtains that help to diffuse the sunlight that comes in through the room's expansive windows.
Pendant lights hang down over an island with bar seating in this country kitchen. Glass door cabinets and provide dish storage around a patterned tile wall above the metallic stove. A strip of subway tile follows the white countertop around the walls of the kitchen. Wooden bar stools, gray herringbone flooring, and a black window frame above the sink add a few contrasting colors to the white decor.
As seen on HGTV's Love It or List It, the renovated kitchen is now located where the old dining room once was. A window was closed up to make room for the new stove and countertop area. A large kitchen island with double sink basins now separates the dining area from the kitchen, and provides a casual eating spot. Modern pendant lighting adds a rich golden color to the dramatic black walls and red bar stools.
For the renovation, the clients' desire was to strike a balance between mountain-rustic and modern, so they kept the exposed beams, wood ceiling and walls to bring the rustic look into the design. They modernized the space by adding sleek, white cabinets and black countertops. Then, they added cool pendant lights, a bold wall color, a matching backsplash and unique window treatments. The open shelves give the couple storage space while displaying the couple's dishes.
Once a raw, industrial space, designers brought in glitzy design details to create a unique residential space. First, they raised the ceilings from eight foot to nearly eleven, creating a more dramatic space. Then, they installed a luxurious black and white tile floor and complimentary copper pendant lights that became the focal point of the space. Finally, they brought in rich, leather furniture and installed a glamorous wet bar to the space.
Favorite feature: The lighting, which is a custom installation of multiple pendants sourced on Ebay, is definitely what catches most people's eye —it’s the conversation starter that gets all the compliments. That design element set against the truly amazing view of the Long Island Sound and the New York City skyline make for a stunning visual. The custom bar is also exceptional with its luxurious materials, from the antique mirror in the back to the exotic wood cabinetry and beautiful Saint Laurent marble on the counter.
