During the extensive renovation of this Hollywood penthouse condominium, the design team restored the doorway onto the balcony, as well as the original openwork columns and railings, creating a beautiful space to overlook the famed Chateau Marmont and surrounding Hollywood Hills. Now, it's a relaxed, lovely and fully restored spot to unwind and enjoy the view.

Keeping views open was an obvious goal, but setting up the spa waterline at just the right height where it would line up with the ocean beyond was a bit tricky. By raising the patio and subsequently the spa by twelve (12"), it allowed enough height for the spa water to blend perfectly with the ocean beyond.

In this case there is a great piece of local art hanging on the wall when the door is open and you see the beautiful stainless tile, so the first impression of that space is much nicer and more contemporary,” says house planner Jack Thomasson.

To capitalize on the incredible mountain view these homeowners have in their backyard, designers created a simple, elegant design for the family's outdoor space. Designers wanted the backyard to feel as if it were an uninterrupted part of the mountains that surround it, so the pool's shape is a straight rectangle that draws the eye to the mountains. Stone tiles are laid at the front of the outdoor space for safety, but grass picks up about a quarter of the way down the length of the pool, making the area blend into the mountains beyond. So that the family can enjoy their space, designers created a lounge area and a dining area, making this space the perfect place for relaxation and play in these beautiful Georgia hills.
Give your yard a touch of the tropics with exotic passion flower vine. ‘Empress Eugenie’ opens exquisite blooms that release a beautiful fragrance. Blossoms have subtle colors, so it’s best to place this vine where you can view the flowers up close and personal. Vines can reach 20 to 30 feet high and 6 to 8 feet wide in warmer regions. Grow it in a container in cold-winter regions, and overwinter in a cool spot where roots won’t freeze. Water sparingly through winter, just enough to keep roots alive. New growth should emerge in spring. Hardy in Zones 7-10. Why we love it: Passionflower is a host plant to several butterflies, including zebra longwings, gulf fritillary and monarchs.
