Instead of stealing the spotlight, this modern home in Scottsdale, Ariz. uses a streamlined, one-story design to keep all eyes on its desert surroundings. As a result, guests who follow the paved driveway can admire tall saguaro plants and see Pinnacle Peak in all its glory.
The neutral kitchen masterfully layers a mix of materials: oak cabinets, a basalt backsplash and travertine countertops. The custom-made dining table, made from oak and ebony, easily has room for eight chairs.
Designer Joan Grabel added a bold red accent wall, which makes the basalt fountain the focal point of the tranquil space. A privacy lattice fence, tiled floor and large shade trees complete this contemporary patio.

A basalt rock and iron fence opens into an Portland, Ore., garden that was inspired by the homeowners' love of gardens in Charleston, S.C., and Savannah, Ga. The garden, which features perennials, roses, and shrubs, was on a 2015 tour hosted by The Garden Conservancy.
An earthy, Craftsman-inspired kitchen features a blue stove to complement the sky and ocean view across the room. A cinderblock-inspired backsplash — which is actually combed basalt — and poured concrete floors bring a cool, industrial feel to the room, which also features an island and custom glass-front cabinets.
The neutral color palette shines throughout this great room. With a mix of textures and tones, the great room is the hub for the family members to relax. Recessing the flatscreen and inserting the firebox within the basalt wall enables the focus wall to remain clean and contemporary without distraction.
The water feature provides a beautiful setting for the commissioned bronze sculpture, "Meadow." The water feature was a challenge because it had to be constructed in the middle of finished patios. The basalt pedestal had a concave and convex side, so late in the project the designer chose the concave side to bubble and the convex side to hold the sculpture.
