Art is showcased in the built-in niches of the white, paneled walls that surround this modern living room. Clear glass floors offer a view of the blue LED-lit wine cellar below, creating a truly one-of-a-kind space.
Mixed colors, materials and shapes provide the unique flavor of this Mediterranean-inspired powder bathroom. Carved out of a niche under the staircase in a 1920's Dallas home, the art deco mirror gives tribute to the home's heritage, while fresh surfaces modernize the space.
Rustic and Asian styles combine to create this striking kitchen. The rectangular wood range hood above the stainless steel oven doubles as a shelf to display art and accessories. Black granite countertops carry through to the niched backsplash featured behind the oven.
A tucked-away niche in the San Francisco Decorator Showcase 2014, Dad's Honey Hole is designer Sunny K. Merry's nod to the private bar of days gone by. Inspired by a veteran of foreign walls, the room includes wallpaper depicting pin-up girls, an Art Deco-era mirror from Paris and a Japanese puffer fish pendant light.
White walls and open spaces characterize the living area of this show-stopping Malibu home. A sitting room features Mid-Century Modern furniture and a modern glass light fixture, while a unique glassed-in wine cellar divides the space from the global-infused living room beyond. Modern art defines a seating niche with a contemporary bench that provides extra seating.
Designer Justine Sterling renovated a low ceiling basement space in a 1920s Colonial with a primary focus to create a small arts and crafts studio. The basement space could solve some of family’s increasing need for a place to store shoes and coats by creating a mudroom niche, a small laundry area and even an upgrade to the teeny powder room.
This multipurpose room functions as a laundry area and craft space. A bold blue island with cabinet space features a butcher block countertop that works great for messy crafts. In one corner, a niched wall works well for a stackable washer and dryer, and on the other side of the door, a built-in bookshelf displays art and knickknacks. A quaint powder room is nearby for convenience.
East meets west in this eclectic entry hall, which features a nail head-studded door, shouldered arch and original crown molding. A star-shaped flush-mount light fixture echoes the star pattern on the door. An original phone niche houses a sculpture from the owner's extensive art collection. French Colonial-inspired architectural elements are set off by the contrast brought by white walls and ebonized hardwood floors.
This room is both a library and a dining room. It features a built-in bookcase with custom millwork, a buffet and niche for art. The look is modern with touches of Asian influence. The dining chairs are also custom and feature Lee Jofa linen velvet with brass nailheads on the back that complement the modern fixture above the table. The window-side table is the final custom piece with a gray marble top and steel base.
Tasked with fitting a washer and two dryers into this slim laundry room, designer RaeLynn Callaway of Classically Yours Interiors had limited space to add storage. She configured the cabinets to make the most of every inch, including open niches for bins and baskets. She also paid special attention to aesthetics, with lively green paint and corner cabinets that house art and accents. "I have realized that if you have a 'happy' laundry room you have a happy laundry person," Callaway says. Fun colors, cabinet hardware, flooring patterns and decor can really make a difference."
