Dramatic art and lighting steals the show in this clean, contemporary dining room. Windows on all sides of the space bring in loads of natural light and offer great views of the backyard. A dark wood dining table with a clean metal base is set off by four plush, yet spare chairs with midcentury styling.
The sleek design of this modern home includes a bold, geometric stairway that cuts a jagged line across the vast white walls. The space's only color comes from art and lighting, including two amber-glass floor lamps that double as modern art. Wood finishes mix with white walls to bring both drama and warmth to the space.
This home in Decatur, Georgia outside Atlanta has five boys all under the age of 5, which means lots of mess. Designer Gina Sims solved that "problem" by creating an adult nook in the kitchen where the boys' art supplies are hidden away in the buffet. Sims advising going up when it comes to design and other elements you want to keep out of kids' reach. "The wine storage went up the wall out of reach, and we added impactful art, lighting and window treatments to draw the eye up," says Sims. Sims was also strategic in her choice of materials for the seating. "The plastic molded chairs are easily wiped down (or hosed off!) and the machine made (read: inexpensive) rug has lots of color and pattern which hide stains," notes Sims.
Fun black and white floor tiles and modern art add spunk to this functional mudroom. The space was added as a spot for the family to store its coats, shoes and backpacks. Pops of bright yellow in the art and lighting stand out against the white walls, trim and ceiling. The window is a reproduction based on an original window design seen elsewhere in the Victorian home.
The bold polka dot wallpaper and custom pop art continue into the adjacent kitchen and dining area. Here, dark wood cabinets provide a rich contrast to the white walls, while recessed and pendant lights ensure that the room is well-lit for meal prep.
The dining room was awkward and small, so designers covered the walls with a fun, gold malachite wallpaper and addd a linear chandelier to distract from the odd lines on the space and draw the eye to the center of the space. To bring in a bigger sense of richness, designers brought in bold purples to accent the gold wallpaper. At the entrance to the space, a surfboard and photography add a playful contrast to the formal, elegant dining space.
To encourage flow from one room to the next, designer Joe Human layered this modern kitchen and hallway with polka dot wallpaper and custom pieces. Three copper barstools, geometric lights and a marble island add a luxe touch to the design.
This huge master bedroom space was an enormous, somewhat overwhelming space, so designers decided to bring textured wallpaper to the half wall behind the bed. They then painted the rest of the walls a similar, dark color to create a more intimate and inviting space. To divide the room, a separate seating area in front of the bed creates an additional relaxing space for the homeowners in their master suite.
