Glass panels on the deck railing allow for crystal-clear views of the backyard. A rattan, egg-shaped swing provides cozy, eclectic outdoor seating. Navy outdoor throw pillows serve as extra seating or a foot rest for the swing.
The raised beds were used to solve drainage problems the lot had. Stone walls allowed for screen plantings along the fence and have room to plant seasonal color in front of them to add some appeal to them. A dry creek bed with oversized gravel meanders throughout the backyard to catch all water runoff from the patio and surrounding beds.

It can be tough to design a long and narrow plot of land -- and to maximize usage of space. Here, the designer added a tiered system to create a sense of dimension and order needed when incorporating so many spaces and elements. The curved walkway softens the block-like plot, and several garden and flower beds liven up the yard.
Backyard with Concrete Patio, Tiered Lawn Area, Trees and Potted Plants
This small-ish but gorgeous back yard has a little bit of everything -- a concrete patio area with Adirondak-style chairs, a tiered lawn and a wood deck in the background. Multiple flower beds -- plus potted plants and native trees -- ensure nature is the primary design element in the outdoor space.
Adults and kids alike can enjoy this backyard, which features a comfortable sitting area and a tire swing. Licensed contractor Matt Blashaw and his crew transformed the Federico residence on HGTV's original series Yard Crashers.
