Take a closer look at the farmhouse sink and see how the marble backsplash and kitchen counters are in perfect harmony. With chrome fixtures and white cabinets above, the vignette is both bright and peaceful.
Wall decals aren’t just for sports fans — they’re for design lovers, too. (And renters, because they aren’t permanent and don’t damage walls.) WALLTAT Wall Decals, for example, offers hundreds of images inspired by nature, pop art and vintage design. All you need is masking tape, a friend to help hold the decal in place, and the squeegee included with the product to apply directly to your wall. Presto, instant color!
In a new home, designer Jodie Cooper took the concept of dramatic lighting to new heights, using a custom-made “bulkhead” suspended from the ceiling by chrome rods to light the kitchen and dining area. “The bulkhead also helps to visually define the kitchen area without losing the loft style feel,” she says. And, she notes, “having a modern kitchen does not need to translate to having modern décor. By blending pieces, such as retro dining chairs, Chinese antiques, rustic dining table combined with Turkish patchwork rugs, we created texture and layers, which add a kind of Bohemian style to the home to create what I call a “Global Eclectic” interior.”
When the kitchen is in the center of the house or in a windowless space, place an oversized mirror over the sink to create the illusion of a window, says Ili Hidalgo-Nilsson, architect and designer with Terracotta Design Build in Atlanta. This home also uses furniture in the kitchen for storage, instead of another row of built-in cabinets.
This modern kitchen is awash in gray, white and glass, forming a neutral backdrop that allows the aqua ocean view to provide the room's pop of color. A waterfall countertop is sleek and modern, and gray clean-lined cabinetry offers ample storage. Walls of glass provide panoramic views.
Instead of searching endlessly for the perfect area rug, create your own colorful look with carpet tiles. You can achieve a big look on a small budget by going modular; just six FLOR® tiles can make a roughly 3’ x 5’ rug or a narrow 10-foot runner, and the individual tiles can cost as little as $8 apiece. Shown is the FLOR style House Pet, which comes in a rainbow of hues and can stand up to heavy foot traffic.
